April 22nd (1970) is the day which the dawn of the modern environmental movement took place. Though we think our earth is a safe place to live in, the truth is quite different.   Sinhala and Tamil new year Sri Lankans celebrate New Year festival which is based upon the journey of sun from House of Pisces to House of Arises. Sinhalese call this function as Aluth Awrudha and to tamiles it is Puththandu. And it symbolises the end of the harvest season. It is generally celebrated on 13 th April or 14 th April. S ri Lankans celebrate this event grandly. B efore the festival t hey make their traditional sweets such as Kavum, Kokis, Alwa. And they dress up with new cloths. New year festival begins with “punya Kalaya” (neutral period). It is a fasting period sri Lankan spend this period with religious activities. There are   series of rituals based on astrological calculations. It starts with the lighting fire to make Kiribath (milk rice) then they enter to the first business transaction and eat the first morsels. Main rituals of sinhala and tamil new year, Preparing food Sri Lankans prepare milk rice. And they boil milk in a new clay pot for prosperity.
