Elf-ing Around In Colour' 23

In a remarkable collaboration between Hope Gallery, the Rotaract Clubs of ACBT, ANC, APIIT, and the Interact Club of Hindu Ladies College, the Elf-ing Around in Colour' 23 project brought together a community of passionate individuals to make a difference in the lives of children. The main objective of this project was to prevent children from entering orphanages and instead provide them with a loving family environment. Through fundraisers and creative workshops, the project aimed to enhance their soft skills and equip them with the tools they need for a brighter future. On the 10th of December, the excitement reached its peak as the project unfolded at Arcade Independence. The day began with a vibrant and exhilarating run, starting at 9:00 am. Participants joyfully made their way from the Arcade to Green Path, while being showered with an array of colors. Laughter and cheers filled the air as everyone embraced the spirit of the event. Empowering Education : A Journey with Project Heena - Phase 01

Image
Education is a powerful tool that has the potential to transform lives and open doors to a brighter future. Unfortunately, not all schools have the necessary resources to provide quality education to their students.  This is where Project Heena, initiated by our passionate members of the Rotaract Club of College of Chemical Sciences stepped in to make a difference. On the 13th of October 2023, our visit to St. Mary's Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, Bambalapitiya, an underprivileged school facing a shortage of teachers in the secondary section, became a memorable experience of knowledge sharing and empowerment. The workshop conducted by our dedicated team focused on revising science subjects - biology, chemistry and physics - for students in the current Ordinary Level Examination classes.  We understood the importance of a strong foundation in these subjects and aimed to bridge the learning gaps. Through interactive sessions, visual aids, and engaging activities, we made the learning experien

Unite Against Polio: The Global Movement for Eradication

Image
Every year, on October 24th, the world comes together to commemorate World Polio Day. This day serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to eradicate polio, a highly contagious and debilitating disease. The global movement for polio eradication has made significant progress, but there is still work to be done in ensuring a polio-free world. Polio, also known as poliomyelitis, primarily affects children under the age of five. It can cause paralysis, muscle weakness, and in severe cases, even death. However, thanks to the tireless efforts of organizations, governments, healthcare professionals, and volunteers worldwide, the number of polio cases has significantly declined. One of the key strategies in polio eradication is vaccination. Vaccines (and drops) have played a crucial role in preventing the spread of the poliovirus. Through widespread immunization campaigns, millions of children have been protected from this devastating disease. These efforts have brought us closer to achiev

Pawsitive Impact : Advocating For Animal Welfare

Image
World Animal Welfare Day is a special day observed globally to raise awareness about the well-being of animals and promote their rights. It's a day to remind ourselves of the importance of treating our furry friends with kindness, compassion, and respect. In Sri Lanka, animal welfare is a matter of great concern. Did you know that around 50% of households in Sri Lanka have at least one pet? Dogs and cats are the most popular choices, bringing joy and companionship to families across the country. However, alongside responsible pet ownership, there is also a significant population of stray animals. Can you believe that there are over 3 million stray dogs in Sri Lanka alone? These animals face numerous challenges, such as hunger, disease, and lack of shelter. To tackle these issues, several organizations and individuals are working tirelessly to promote animal welfare in Sri Lanka. They provide veterinary care, rescue and rehabilitate stray animals, and educate the public about resp

Technology & Laziness: A Connection?

Image
In today's fast-paced world, technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. From smartphones and tablets to smart appliances and automation, technology has undoubtedly transformed the way we live and work, solving problems or further improving a pre-existing solution. One could say technology has made life easy but it has also made us dependent on modern machines, causing us to use our body and mind less. One of the recurring debates surrounding this technological revolution is whether it has contributed to an increase in societal laziness. In fact, it has happened to me, I barely got off my phone even before sleeping. Is it that we just take advantage of the technology that is available and over-use it? Or is it that our society we live in today cannot function without having a mobile phone glued to our hands all day? Parks are empty because children rather enjoy watching cartoons at home. Likewise, shopping centers have experienced a decline in long queues due to onli

Understanding the Tiny Threat Inside Your Meals

In today's modern world, plastic pollution has reached alarming levels, infiltrating nearly every corner of the environment, including our food. Microplastics, tiny plastic particles measuring less than 5 millimeters, have stealthily entered the food chain, raising concerns about their impact on human health. Let's explore the issue of microplastics in food, the amount present in the human body, and strategies to enhance food safety. Microplastics in Food: A Growing Concern Microplastics in food have become a pressing issue due to their ubiquity. These minuscule plastic particles find their way into our meals through various routes, such as contaminated water sources, plastic packaging, and food processing methods. Seafood, salt, and even fruits and vegetables have all been found to contain microplastics. Microplastics in the Human Body Research indicates that microplastics are not just an environmental concern; they are also present in the human body. Recent studies have shown
