  INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION International Day of Education is an annual international observance day held on 24 th January and is dedicated to education in celebration of the role of education for bringing global peace and sustainable development. This day signifies the adoption of Article 26 in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to make primary education available to all. This year International Education Day occurs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic that led to a global learning disruption of unprecedented scale and severity. The closure of schools, universities and other learning institutions, as well as the interruption of many literacy and lifelong learning programmes, has affected the lives of 1.6 billion students in over 190 countries.   Let’s celebrate the Tamil Thai Pongal day! Thai Pongal day is a multi-day harvest festival observed by Tamil and Telegu community. Thai Pongal falls on the first day of the month of Thai in the Tamil traditional calendar, which is normally between January 13 th and 16 th on the western calendar. In India it is celebrated for four days but in Sri Lanka it is mostly celebrated for one or two days. This year it is celebrated on 14 th of January in Sri Lanka. In India the four days are classified as Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, Mathu Pongal and Kanum Pongal. The highlight of this festival is to show appreciation to sun god for a bountiful harvest. It is like a thanksgiving festival held for the year’s harvest. Tamils consider cattle as their source of wealth as they provide milk for dairy products, aids in agricultural activities and transportation.   M otivation and Inspiration  Do you know what’s really ironical? The fact that I’m writing an article on motivation and inspiration when in reality, the only thing that motivated me to write this was the deadline. Isn’t that how it is for most things in life? How many things have you done because you actually felt inspired? Or motivated by something other than a deadline or time limit or just not wanting to feel the crushing ache of guilt and failure?    So I’ll let you in on a little secret; motivation and inspiration are both very nice to have, but what’s actually going to get you far in life is discipline. Because let’s be honest, you’re NEVER going to feel “inspired” to wake up at 5 am to study differential equations. Sure, you might be motivated to pass the exam, but it’s DISCIPLINE that makes you actually open the book.
