Malkanthi's Story

Image
By Rtr. Saarah Hamdoon Life can take a turn for the better or worse when we least expect it. This is something that many of us may have experienced at some point in our lives. Malkanthi is one such individual.. Once an energetic and hard-working lady who was employed abroad, life came to a crashing halt when she lost her husband and fell ill. When our team of Rotaractors visited her with donations on the 10th of November, she showed photographs of her younger self and reminisced about her happier days. Suffering from spinal cord and heart ailments and unable to walk unassisted, she now resides in a humble home constructed with corrugated sheets, bereft of basic facilities.  The scene was heart-wrenching.  Much planning and preparation went into our project to help Malkanthi. The third project under the avenue of community service, this project was chaired by Rtr. Raveen Perera and Rtr. Nethma Wethalawe.  The donations included a bed, a wheelchair, six month

By Rtr Afra Irfan Click. Send. Repeat.  We are all undoubtedly under the hypnotic influence, the constant push and pull of the tide  that we call Social Media. And we can undoubtedly, also  agree on the fact that  the era of the internet has made lives significantly better. It has given us the chance  to project our thoughts and  voices to a global platform and have them be actually heard and considered .  But  while some voices are  keen  advocates for justice and all things good,  there are some  voices  that can be brutally critical, harsh, threatening and derogatory.  They  can  come  in any form, under any guise, with the sole intention of tearing down and degrading another person.  This is just a  basic definition of  Cyber bullying  and it  is an actual problem that is prevalent in all parts of the world today.  The  Rotaract  Club of CCS addres ses the issue of Cyber bullying, and  through  the   introduc tion of our  online anti-bullying initiative  known as “ Cyber

Mojito Stall Fundraiser

Image
By Rtr. Afra Irfan It was an exciting day. The atmosphere was electric at the De Soyza International Cricket Stadium. People arrived with smiles on their faces and cheers on their lips. It was the day of the annual CCS vs SAITM big match cricket encounter. You could just taste the energy in the air. And some might even say, that the energy tasted a lot like mojitos.  On the day of the match, the Rotaract Club of CCS had set up a virgin mojito stall for the purpose of raising funds for the upcoming installation. A lot of hard work and thought were put in to it, and after all that effort, it’s safe to say that the stall was a definite hit. The crowds were clamoring for a sip of the ice cold mojitos, that were perfect for any warm day, and we had a variety to offer them. To name a few were the virgin mojito, the black mojito, the passion mojito and the black current mojito.  Our team members set up the stall and worked with great vigor and enthusiasm,

Be their Smile!  By Rtr. Thashmila Another noble thought towards the helpless, donating necessities to the Cancer Hospital, Maharagama was carried out by the Rotaract club of CCS in collaboration with the college Saukyadhana unit, on 28th of February 2017.  A sterilizing machine, food, and medicine were donated to patients when their guardians accepted them with tears in their eyes. Along with theirs, Prof.S.P.Deraniyagala, the humble teacher who helped us in many ways, was weeping with the memories of his mother, who also passed away six months after being diagnosed with cancer. If there's one thing visiting the Cancer hospital teaches you, it's that our lives could always turn out to be the most unexpected of all. With this thought in mind, the Rotaract club of CCS will always be giving a hand to the needy.  Us, Rotaractors Thashmila and Raveen along with all members of the Rotaract club of CCS thank Prof. S.P.Deraniyagala, Prof.

Valentine's day for a worthy cause! මනුෂ්යත්වයේ පාගමන By Rtr. Nethmie Jayasooriya ‘Congenital heart disease is a major killer in children under five years of age. For every 1000 new-born babies, 6-8 are born with a congenital heart disease. It is estimated that 2,500-3,000 children are born with a congenital heart disease every year in Sri Lanka. Most of them will need either surgical or catheter-based treatment within the first year of their life. Unless treated in a timely manner some of them will not live to see their first birthday and a majority will die before they reach adulthood.' මනුෂ්යත්වයේ පාගමන was organized by the Little Hearts Foundation of Sri Lanka in collaboration with Shraddha TV. The walk started on 14th of February at 8 am from Colombo Fort Railway station covering most parts of Colombo city. Prior to the walk Hon.
