#Be Their Smile

 By Rtr. Afnan Azeem

Some people say that their life sucks, and that nothing could possibly get any worse, some people you meet in your life are so gloomy that you see no hope in their eyes when you look into them....

But when we walked into the Maharagama cancer hospital on the
14th of august, we realized that the single most bravest thing we can do is to look through all out troubles, all our defeats and smile. Smile so that we can give ourselves and others hope.

We saw children there who smiled and laughed, clapped and sang, danced and made merriment with us despite all the harsh fates life had dealt to them. We saw their faces light up with delight when they saw all the balloons and the fun events we had for them, and it was then that I truly understood that if these children have the strength of mind to smile and have hope after all that life has put them through, then we should take an example from them and be strong as they are.

As rotaract club of CCS we managed to donate a total of Rs.136,172 which included medicine worth of Rs.95,800 .We could fulfill some requirements of the children’s ward by providing them 2 writing tables, dustbins and cups. It felt great to work as a team and to be in rotaract, working for something good, something that would make peoples’ lives better. And give them hope and strength. We learnt a lot of things and gained so many experiences.

We saw a lot in those children. We saw their wards, their lifestyle, and their lives in general. It inspired us, not just as a team, but as a rotaract family, to keep working towards their welfare and happiness, making it every bit as successful as this time.

There was one little child who particularly struck me as unique and inspirational. When the event was over he walked up to me and whispered in Tamil- "Can I have a balloon?" I smiled and took one that was hanging and gave it to him. What he did next was he went over to another little girl, and handed it to her. It sent a message so strongly to me- it meant that- even through all that little boy’s worries and hardships, he still had the courage and thoughtfulness in his heart to ask a balloon for his little friend.

This is why I think that though we think we have lived through most things, and have experienced and learnt much, we can learn something from these wonderful children. Children whose eyes shine with the hope of tomorrow :).

We, the Rotaractors of the College of Chemical sciences will always stand by and support this cause, so that we can make a change, together.
