Ifthar 2017

By Rtr. Jasra Saneer

The annual District Rotaract Ifthar was held for the 8th consecutive time on the 17th of June 2017 (which corresponded to the month of Ramazan in the Islamic calendar) from 5:30pm onward at the residence of Rtr. PP Aneez Anver in Mosque Lane, Rajagiriya.

There were around 16 organising clubs who hosted “Ifthar 2017” to make it a success. The Rotaract Club of CCS was proud to have been invited to be a part of the Ifthar ceremony that promised a great evening of fellowship and yes, food! A group of our members led by Rtr. IPP Imasha Yapa and president, Rtr. Dilendra Nilupuli Wijesekara, attended the Ifthar along with other Rotaractors who were present in numbers.

The Ifthar started off with the Islamic ritual of biting into dates when the call for prayer was announced, followed by the savouring of the mandotary porridge also known as “kanji''.

Apart from enjoying the food, the Rotaractors lightened up the atmosphere by cracking jokes and by getting acquainted with new rotaractors. Old friends from past rotaract projects met up, shared stories and clicked photos. It was indeed an evening of fellowship and club service.

Later in the evening, the conventional “biryani” was served, which was one of the highlights of the evening as it was eaten in a cultural way by groups of 6 in dishes called “savans”. Many rotaractors were fascinated by this and called it a way of strengthening bonds among friends. The organizers ensured that all guests were as comfortable as possible.

Our club was lucky to be among the crowd as new members learnt one the purposes of Rotaract which is to uphold comradeship through events like Ifthars, regardless of religion or race.
