Malkanthi's Story

By Rtr. Saarah Hamdoon

Life can take a turn for the better or worse when we least expect it. This is something that many of us may have experienced at some point in our lives. Malkanthi is one such individual..

Once an energetic and hard-working lady who was employed abroad, life came to a crashing halt when she lost her husband and fell ill. When our team of Rotaractors visited her with donations on the 10th of November, she showed photographs of her younger self and reminisced about her happier days. Suffering from spinal cord and heart ailments and unable to walk unassisted, she now resides in a humble home constructed with corrugated sheets, bereft of basic facilities.
The scene was heart-wrenching.

Much planning and preparation went into our project to help Malkanthi. The third project under the avenue of community service, this project was chaired by Rtr. Raveen Perera and Rtr. Nethma Wethalawe.
The donations included a bed, a wheelchair, six months' supply of medication, dry rations and toiletries. The contentment felt on completing the project was immense; a truly rewarding experience.
