Guiding Light
Guiding Light
Choosing a career path can be confusing, especially for students who are just stepping out of school and trying to decide what comes next. After completing their G.C.E. Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations, many students find themselves facing uncertainty about their future. While traditional academic routes are often seen as the only option, many are unaware of the wide range of alternative opportunities available to build a successful and fulfilling career.
Understanding this, the Rotaract Club of College of Chemical Sciences, in collaboration with the Interact Club of Asoka College, Colombo 10, organized Guiding Light, a career guidance workshop created to help students make informed decisions about their future. The project aimed to provide clarity, confidence, and direction to students at an important stage in their academic and career journey.
What Was the Project About?
We organized a career guidance workshop for students who had recently completed their G.C.E. Ordinary Level examinations. The session was designed to help them better understand the changing world of careers and the many paths they can take after school.
The program covered:
* Emerging and declining career fields, helping students understand how the job market is changing .
* The importance of transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem solving.
* Identifying personal strengths and “superpowers” through interactive activities.
* Alternative pathways after O/L and A/L examinations, including diploma programs, professional qualifications, NVQ certified courses, and entrepreneurship.
* How students can achieve qualifications equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree or higher through non traditional routes.
The session created a comfortable and engaging space where students could ask questions, reflect on their strengths, and gain a clearer idea of the opportunities available to them.
Why We Chose to Focus on Career Guidance
For many students in Sri Lanka, career decisions are often shaped by limited awareness or the belief that success only comes through a few traditional academic paths. Because of this, students may miss out on opportunities that better match their skills, interests, and future goals.
As a club committed to service and youth empowerment, we wanted to:
* Help students make informed career choices at a crucial stage in their lives.
* Introduce them to wider opportunities beyond the usual academic pathways.
* Build confidence by helping them recognize their own strengths and abilities.
* Encourage the development of important skills that are useful in any profession.
* Bridge the gap between school education and career readiness.
Through Guiding Light, we hoped to remind students that there is no single path to success, and that understanding their options can make a big difference in shaping their future.
How the Workshop Was Conducted
The workshop was planned in a way that allowed students to not only listen, but also actively take part in the session. This made the experience both informative and engaging.
The session was conducted by Ms. Kalani Pothupitiya, Manager at the CIPM Business School, who joined as the guest speaker. She began by introducing students to emerging and declining career fields, explaining how the modern job market is changing and why it is important to stay informed about new opportunities.
A valuable part of the session focused on helping students discover their personal strengths. Through interactive activities, they were encouraged to identify their own skills and “superpowers,” and understand how those strengths could connect with suitable career paths.
The workshop also gave special attention to alternative pathways available after O/L and A/L examinations. Instead of focusing only on traditional university routes, students were introduced to options such as diploma programs, professional qualifications like CQ HRM, CA, and CIMA, NVQ certified courses, and entrepreneurship. One of the most interesting parts for the students was learning how these alternative routes can also lead to qualifications equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree or even higher.
Feedback and Response
The workshop received a very positive response from the participating students. They were actively involved throughout the session, asked thoughtful questions, and showed genuine interest in the topics discussed.
A Step Toward a Brighter Future
Guiding Light was more than just a workshop. It was an opportunity to support students at an important stage of their lives by giving them the knowledge and encouragement they need to move forward with confidence. By introducing them to the changing career landscape and the many educational and professional pathways available, the project helped them see that success is not limited to one route.
As Rotaractors, we believe that the right guidance at the right time can have a lasting impact. Through this initiative, we were able to help students look at their future with a wider perspective and a stronger sense of purpose.
Guiding Light stands as a meaningful effort by the Rotaract Club of College of Chemical Sciences to guide students toward informed career choices and a brighter future.
