මනුෂ්යත්වයේ පාගමන
By Rtr. Nethmie Jayasooriya
‘Congenital heart disease is a major killer in children under five years of age. For every 1000 new-born babies, 6-8 are born with a congenital heart disease. It is estimated that 2,500-3,000 children are born with a congenital heart disease every year in Sri Lanka. Most of them will need either surgical or catheter-based treatment within the first year of their life. Unless treated in a timely manner some of them will not live to see their first birthday and a majority will die before they reach adulthood.'
මනුෂ්යත්වයේ පාගමන was organized by the Little Hearts Foundation of Sri Lanka in collaboration with Shraddha TV. The walk started on 14th of February at 8 am from Colombo Fort Railway station covering most parts of Colombo city. Prior to the walk Hon. Kiribathgoda Gnananada Thero and Mr. Ravindra Randeniya addressed the gathering explaining the cause of the walk. The parents of the deceased children due to congenital heart disease also spoke about the hard time they went through to save their children.
The main objective of the project was to raise funds to construct a 10 story building which is to be the children’s cardiac unit of Lady Ridgeway Hospital and to bring awareness about the congenital heart disease.
We are delighted to say that with the dedication of everyone who participated in the project, Rs 4,555,039 was collected within a day. The event impacted in bringing awareness to the general community about the current situation of congenital heart disease in the country.
The Rotaract club of CCS along with the Rotaract Club of Panadura, Rotaract Club of NSBM and fellow students was given the opportunity to participate in future events organized by Shraddha TV.
Money was collected from the shops around the city and passengers. In the evening the money collected was handed over to the Little Heart Foundation at the Cambell grounds, Borella. With the help of all the participants, Rs 4,555,039 was collected.
Refreshments were provided to those who participated in this worthy cause.
