Empowering Minds through Psychological First Aid

Empowering Minds through Psychological First Aid

In a world where mental well-being is often overlooked, knowing how to support someone in distress is a vital skill. The Psychological First Aid Workshop, conducted by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of College of Chemical SciencesRotaract Club of General Sir John Kotelawala Defense Unit Southern Campus, and the Saukyadana Unit of College of Chemical Sciences gave participants a hands-on opportunity to learn how to provide emotional support and respond effectively in challenging situations.

Led by Consultant Drama Therapist Mr. Ravindra Ranasinghe, a representative of the Red Cross, the workshop combined theory, discussion, and practical exercises. Participants engaged in group discussions and role plays, exploring distressing scenarios, identifying emotional reactions, and practicing techniques such as calming, active listening, and connecting individuals to appropriate help. The session also addressed complex situations, psychosocial triage, and the importance of referring individuals for professional support when necessary. A special focus on self-care reminded participants that looking after oneself is the first step in supporting others.

At the end of the workshop, participants received an official Psychological First Aid certificate, recognized by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society. This certificate is highly valuable, as it equips participants with the skills to help people in real situations and make a meaningful difference in their communities.

This initiative strengthened participants’ ability to provide psychological support and reinforced the shared mission of compassion, awareness, and community care.
