Pack Away Hunger

By. Rtr. Sanduni Nakandala

Not to make you feel guilty, but please take a minute to think about what you threw out of your refrigerator this week: that piece of cake you could not finish, the yogurt that had passed its’ expiration date, the leftover food from last night. It all adds up. Now look around you, think of the people who are not privileged enough to even buy one meal per day. Can you even imagine having to wait till the shops close before you can “go home” because your “home” is actually a busy street by day?

When you see the conditions that the poor & homeless people in your city live in, you will come to understand how lucky and fortunate you truly are to be able to live somewhere you are able to call home. Even if you are just renting a room and can’t afford a house yet, it is still much better than having to collect recycled bottles to make a living during the day, and scavenge for thrown away food in garbage cans. Once you start realizing that, that is when you truly start to understand and be thankful for how lucky you are to at least have a proper roof over your head and at least to enjoy having one meal per day.

As an initial step for this matter the Rotaract club of College of Chemical Science came up with an idea to share our lunch with 20 needy and homeless people around the Rajagiriya, Diyatha and Borella area. Rtr. Senuri Hasara and Rtr. Virosha Ariyawansha ; the community service directors came up with the idea of sharing lunch packets as our club's first community service project. The rice packets were purchased from a shop, and it was distributed on the 30th of September, with the help of our own board and club members. We started distributing rice packets around 12 noon and took a walk from Rajagiriya to Diyatha and Borella while distributing the rice packets to the homeless who lives on the streets. Despite of getting scorched under the hot sun, it was an amazing and meaningful experience that we as a club feel that everyone should try to be a part of, at least once in their lifetime.

Although we could not reach a lot of people we believe that our small act would inspire many to contribute to this fight against poverty and hunger.
